We have identified the following disadvantages using Link Exchanges:
The influence of a reciprocate link for a search engine is not the same as what it use to be. Search Engine can easily identify these links between websites, and removing the impact it would have had in the past.
The other website might not add your website link, or might remove the link within a few days of adding it.
You can not control the "anchor text" or "link text" back to your website.
You usually do not have control of exactly where the reciprocate link will be placed i.e. on which page.
The reciprocate link might be coming from a links page containing thousands of links, reducing the quality and "voting power" of the link back to your website.
Having links to other websites, might direct your traffic away from your website.
Search Engines understand that you can not control inbound links however they do expect you to control your outbound links. By linking to a dodgy site might have a negative impact on your website.
