Backlinks are links pointing to a specific websites, from a 3rd party website. They are also called inbound links, and they are used by Search Engines to calculate the importance of a website. Google also use backlinks to calculate websites' Google PageRank.

These Backlinks usually contain anchor text, which is an indication of the subject matter the destination website might consist of.

Search Engines use information such as Topic / Category of Source Website, Topic / Category of the destination website, anchor text in link, etc. to calculate the importance of a website for a specific keyword / phrase.

Please remember, all links are not equal, and the quality of a link from a related website is better than a link from a non-related website, e.g. website directories or link exchange websites.
