Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization is the process of optimizing a website for Search Engines, to allow the search engines to index the pages and identify the most important information on the website. The result of a successful search engine optimization implementation is higher search engine rankings, which will result into more referred visitors from Search Engines.

Search Engines Optimization can be achieved be completing the following steps:

  1. Start by selecting the keywords / phrases you would like to use to optimise you website for. Be specific. Remember, by selecting specific keywords, you will be able to attract better quality users. Lets assume your site contains information about home loans, even though you might refer to the keywords like money and finance, you might not want to optimise for those keywords. Why not. Firstly the competition is extremely high for single keywords, so getting enough back-links to your site to rank very high with these keyword might cost you more that what you can imagine. Secondly, once a user finds your site through the term finance, by searching for example car finance, he will exit your site quite quickly because your site does not have any information regarding financing cars.
  2. Now that you have selected your keyword, select specific pages that will be used for each keyword / phrase. Try not to optimize for more than one keyword per page. You can combine similar keywords. Try to use existing pages / content on your site. If you do not have a page available for a specific keyword, create a new page with unique content.
  3. If possible rename the URLs of the pages to also contain the selected keywords for the page. Remember to redirect the old page to the new page by using the 301 redirect command to prevent duplicate content and broken links.
  4. Update the Title Tags, Heading Tags and page content to contain the selected keywords. Do not litter your pages with the keywords, because the search engines will then see that as spam and penalize your site. Firstly create the page content with the user in mind, and them focus on the keywords in the specific areas as mentioned above.
  5. Link internal pages with preselected anchor text to these pages. Link related pages to one another, and links within the content also carry more wait these days.
  6. Get as many as possible Inbound Links from external Websites to these web pages. Vary the inbound anchor text. Search engines can detect inconsistencies, e.g. all links to a specific site only contains a single phrase, or you have site wide links from a single site.
